This is totally depends up on your requirements, interest, your budget and so on, You are confuse about a should i buy laptop or desktop : i tell my suggestion
The laptop is for portability. That’s its only positive point. Everything else is just plain worse on a laptop. So, you need to make a choice here. What are your requirements, as opposed to your “nice to haves”.
E.g. Do you “need” the laptop in your classes? Must you carry it around? For what purpose, to take notes? Would you want to play games while on the move (BTW not going to happen for more than a few minutes on battery)?
Can you have a secondary desktop for other things? Say if you need to do some form of project, which may require graphics editing stuff? Then, a gaming desktop is going to wipe the floor with even high-end “gaming” laptops.
The ideal would likely be to get some very cheap laptop. Just enough to handle notes and presentations. Even just something akin to a Chromebook is already sufficient for this. In fact, most tablets would suffice. Then spend whatever the difference to a “gaming laptop” would have been, on a desktop. And you’d have a MUCH more capable desktop than you’d have had by buying just the one laptop.

What is Pros and Cons of Laptop Vs Desktop
Here’s my experience with Laptop after being on desktop for many years:
Laptops are very portable, which means I can sit on a sofa, on a chair, on the roof in sunlight, anywhere I want. It’s a huge plus for me.
Laptops don’t shutdown due to load shedding. In my area, there is a huge issue of load shedding. So, laptops work for me.
Desktops also have a plus which laptops don’t have. You can easily replace parts, e.g. graphic cards. It doesn’t concern me that much but if this was in my laptop, it would have been good.
Desktops don’t have that much heating issue compared to laptops (in my experience).
Desktop parts usually are more affordable compared to laptop’s.
